THE ALTAMOUNT ROAD RESIDENCE BY ARCHITECT ASHIESH SHAH
Located in the vibrant city of Mumbai, The Altamount Road project, by world renowned architect Ashiesh Shah, is a testament to the timeless sophistication and innovative design that define today's luxury living spaces. Shah’s portfolio spans high-end projects in India and beyond, having studied at Parsons School of Design in New York, he seamlessly incorporates the context of his designs by referencing their location through careful design considerations. His latest project, the Altamount Road residence, featured in Architectural Digest India and the Middle East, sets a benchmark for contemporary luxury embracing Mumbai’s charm through an international lens.
The residence, designed as a haven for a family of two, combines muted tones and natural light to create an atmosphere that is both light and artful. The apartment is segmented into a social den and a private retreat, with curved walls and screens introducing a sense of fluidity to elegantly delineate the space. Throughout the apartment, Shah has implemented various wall treatments, including parchment, embroidery, marble, and wood, infusing the space with warmth and character.
The project incorporates traditional handcrafted pieces alongside curated furniture and artworks, expertly blending Indian crafts with international design. In his interview with Architectural Digest, Shah stated that “true luxury lies in the uniqueness of objects,” a belief that is reflected in his meticulous attention to detail in all elements of the project, featuring works by international designers such as Pietro Franceschini, Alexander Lamont, and Zaha Hadid. Notably, Pierre Augustin Rose’s Le Minitore Armchairs featured in the foyer mimic the smooth lines of the interior, inviting a textural element while presenting a unified and inviting space.
The home’s connection to its Mumbai locale is thoughtfully established through design elements that reference the city's rich heritage. An oval porthole window in the sitting area subtly references the port of Mumbai, seamlessly integrating the city’s essence into the living space. Fernando Mastrangelo’s custom-made statement mirror located in the entrance foyer nods to the Seven Islands of Bombay local to Mumbai, contributing to the Art Deco motif present throughout the apartment. This local touch, combined with the project’s contemporary appeal, creates an interior that is both eclectic and inspired.
