CONTEMPORARY ARTIST
JASON TROTTER

Jason Trotter is an esteemed American artist based in Los Angeles, celebrated for his geometric abstract paintings in acrylic. Trotter's work is distinguished by bold abstractions and precise lines, exploring the dynamics between color and form. His contributions to the art world have been recognized in Forbes, Manhattan Magazine, and at the biannual New Canaan Holiday House Tour. His signature compositions, consisting of three canvases merged into a single framed entity, incorporate architectural elements that balance spatial unity and create depth. "I had the idea to break them up over multiple canvases. While each features a single, simple shape, once they unite the correlation from panel to panel creates something more compelling," he explains. This technique not only enhances the visual and spatial impact of his pieces but also adds a layer of complexity and intrigue.

Trotter's artistic process is deeply meditative, which he believes is crucial not only to the creation of his work but also to how it is perceived by viewers. "It helps me to approach my work with a more open mind. Studio work involves making many mistakes, but those mistakes often turn out to be blessings because they push the work in a particular direction," he shares. "When I’m in this sort of meditative state I’m less likely to force something or judge what’s happening. I'm less attached to a particular outcome and able to go with the flow a bit more. I think ultimately this helps me learn and grow as an artist." Jason Trotter’s approach to integrating his artwork with the field of interior design focuses primarily on the intrinsic aesthetic and balance of each piece. "When I’m creating, I’m trying to achieve something aesthetically. For example, when I’m sketching my aim is to create a composition that feels balanced and has spatial unity—but on its own, not in relation to anything else," he explains. The exception to this practice occurs when he undertakes commissioned work, where he considers the specific environment and seeks to tailor his compositions to enhance and complement the particular setting, ensuring the artwork harmonizes with its intended space.

Currently, Trotter continues to push the boundaries of his medium, exploring new themes and techniques, particularly in how he builds texture on his shapes. "I’m constantly playing around and exploring how I build up texture on my shapes," he says. "I apply the final and thickest layer of paint with palette knives and other tools to incorporate different patterns and textures." This ongoing experimentation with texture and form keeps his work fresh and continually evolving. Through his innovative use of multi-canvas compositions, Trotter not only challenges traditional art forms but also enriches the viewer's experience by creating complex, engaging pieces. As Trotter persists in experimenting with texture and form, his evolving style promises to keep captivating the art world and enhancing interior spaces with his distinct artistic vision.
